“In celebration of the publication of F is for Phony: Fake Documentaries and Truth’s Undoing (Univ. of Minnesota Press, 2006), the first book-length study of the ‘fake documentary’ published in the U.S., co-editors Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner (who have both had their hands in the making of fake docs) present a selection of films discussed in their anthology. This evening’s screening ranges from early cinema first ersatz actualities to the contemporary post-colonial essay film, and includes Luis Buñuel’s ‘Land without Bread/Tierra sin pan’ (1932), Mitchell W. Block’s ‘no lies’ (1972), Marlon Fuentes’ ‘Bontoc Eulogy’ (1995) and other surprises. We’ll discuss the issues raised about representation, truth, veracity, and filmmaking.”
